“Saloneras” 2019

This project titled Saloneras is a series of images that depict the day to day of women who work in salons. Personal to me because this is my family owned salon, I grew up here and spent most of my childhood and teenage years here. Growing up seeing these women and my mom work so hard really inspires me because it is not easy to work 13 hour days on your feet, 6 days of the week. I wanted to photograph the community that has been formed of women working very closely together but also personal interactions amongst themselves and customers. This series shows how personal your place of work can be and what community building is like. I say this because in some of these images you see workers with their families, creating personal relationships with customers. I think this project is also a reflection of myself and a very important part of who I am. These women, my aunt and mother really taught me what it means to work hard and taught me how to appreciate everything we have.
